A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
