Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to contest specific rulings made by the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
